Rock Magazine Masthead Analysis

Due to thinking about my final Magazine front cover, I have decided to analyse existing magazine front cover mastheads to start to think what I will want my masthead to look like.

    • Majority of the front covers include the colours black, red and white. I think that red connotes violence, danger and blood which is what rock can be associated with. Also the connotation of  black is death and darkness which contributes to the stereotype of rock and people who listen to the genre.
    • We can see that all of the mastheads have a clear font, so that you can see what the masthead spells. Also the masthead of the rolling stone is less basic than the rest. This could be considered a more formal and sophisticated rock magazine, the same as 'Q'. But we can see that 'KERRANG' and 'NME'  use captital letters, this could be connoted as the use of shouting and loud volumes. Also they are more bold and have a bigger font. This is because they want their masthead to stand out just as much as anything else. Also Kerrang magazine can sometimes have their main image infront of the masthead, therefore they need the letters which the audience can see to stand out.
